Clavamox targets and kills susceptible bacteria by inhibiting the biosynthesis of a bacterial cell wall peptide. The addition of Clavulanic acid to Amoxicillin extends the spectrum of activity to include Amoxicillin resistant bacteria. 

A broad-spectrum antibiotic is one that is effective against a wide range of disease-causing bacteria in contrast to a narrow-spectrum antibiotic, which is effective against specific families of bacteria. 

Discuss your pet’s willingness to take medication and your ability to give the dose as prescribed. Consistency in dosing is important because missed or delayed doses can affect the effectiveness of Clavamox, resulting in a delay in healing and promotion of antibiotic resistance. Talk to your veterinarian about any current medication your pet may be taking and the history of medication sensitivity. Ask if medication should be given with food or on an empty stomach and potential side effects of the medication.

When 112 client owned dogs were given Clavamox Chewable Tablets, 83% ate the tablet freely within 5 minutes from an empty bowl or the owner’s hand.⁵

The most often reported side effects in dogs and cats include inappetence, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea.⁵

Do not remove from foil strip until ready to use. 

Clavamox Chewable Tablets are dosed in whole tablet increments. If a tablet is broken during chewing process, it is important to ensure the entire tablet is consumed. 

The safety of Clavamox has not been evaluated in pregnant or breeding animals. Clavamox is contraindicated in animals with a history of allergic reaction to any of the penicillins or cephalosporins. Clavamox is not for human use and should be kept out of the reach of children. Antimicrobial drugs, including Clavamox, can cause allergic reactions in sensitized individuals.
